Chiropractic Care for When Pregnancy Starts Hurting, Safe & Top Rated

‍As your belly grows, your posture, balance, and movement change, which can put new demands on your body.

Pregnancy chiropractic care is focused on helping you move more comfortably through it all.

Why Pregnancy Can Change the Way Your Body Feels

Pregnancy can change how you stand, walk, sleep, and move. As your baby grows, your center of gravity shifts, your posture adapts, and the muscles and joints around your lower back and pelvis have to handle a different load.

That can show up as low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, hip or SI joint discomfort, stiffness, or pain with everyday movements such as walking, standing, getting out of a chair, or turning over in bed. These aren't just minor annoyances when they start affecting how you sleep, work, exercise, or get through your day.

Pregnancy-related low back and pelvic pain is common enough that researchers have specifically studied ways to manage it. A 2020 systematic review looked at 50 articles, including 30 randomized controlled trials, on treatments for pregnancy-related low back pain and pelvic girdle pain. The researchers found some favorable findings for chiropractic care, but concluded that the overall evidence was still inconclusive.

That means chiropractic care shouldn't be presented as something that will make pregnancy pain disappear. It may, however, be one part of a plan for managing pregnancy-related musculoskeletal pain and movement problems, particularly when care is tailored to what you're experiencing.

What Is Prenatal Chiropractic Care?

Prenatal chiropractic care isn't a completely different kind of chiropractic adjustment. It's chiropractic care adapted for pregnancy, with the techniques, positioning, and treatment choices taking your stage of pregnancy, symptoms, comfort, and health history into account.

At Thrive, that can include:

A Pregnancy-Specific Evaluation

We start by finding out where you're hurting, what movements are bothering you, how long you've been dealing with it, and how pregnancy has changed the way you move.

Pregnancy-Adapted Adjustments

An adjustment isn't performed the same way on every patient. Your position, the area being addressed, the amount of force used, and the technique can all be modified to keep you comfortable as your pregnancy progresses.

Pelvic & Movement Support

Pelvic girdle pain can make ordinary movements surprisingly difficult. Care may focus on improving movement and managing discomfort around the pelvis, hips, and lower back.

Movement & Exercise Guidance

Chiropractic care doesn't have to stop at the treatment table. Appropriate exercises, activity advice, and movement strategies can be part of managing pregnancy-related back or pelvic pain.

A 2021 international best-practice consensus developed 71 recommendations for chiropractic care during pregnancy and postpartum, specifically for patients with low back pain, pelvic girdle pain, or both. The recommendations covered informed consent, examination, imaging when appropriate, interventions, lifestyle factors, and coordination with other healthcare professionals.

What Your Prenatal Visits Can Look Like

Pregnancy doesn't stay the same from one month to the next, so your appointments shouldn't either.

You might come in during your second trimester because your lower back has started aching after a day at work. A few weeks later, the problem might be getting comfortable in bed or feeling pain around your pelvis when you walk. What we do at each visit depends on what's bothering you, how you're moving, and where you are in your pregnancy.

Your care may include:

Talking through what's changed

We'll ask what's hurting, what movements are difficult, and what has changed since your last visit. That's part of figuring out whether chiropractic care is appropriate and what approach makes sense.

Adjustments adapted for pregnancy

Your position and the technique used can be modified as your pregnancy progresses. Supportive equipment and pregnancy-specific positioning can also make the appointment more comfortable.

Pelvic & Postural Support

Pelvic and hip discomfort can make things like walking, standing, getting out of the car, or turning over in bed surprisingly difficult. When those areas are part of the problem, they're part of the conversation.

Movement outside the office

Depending on what you're dealing with, simple exercises or movement suggestions may be included to help you stay comfortable between appointments.

Changing the plan as you change

The technique or positioning that feels appropriate earlier in pregnancy may not be what makes sense later. Your care can be adjusted as your body and symptoms change.

What Can Prenatal Chiropractic Care Actually Help With?

Let's be realistic about this. Chiropractic care isn't going to stop your belly from growing or make every pregnancy ache disappear. The reason to seek care is much simpler: you're uncomfortable, something hurts, or your changing body is making certain movements harder than they used to be.

Research has looked most closely at pregnancy-related low back pain and pelvic girdle pain. A 2020 systematic review covering 50 articles found some favorable results for chiropractic care and spinal manipulation, but concluded that the overall evidence was still inconclusive.

So the realistic goal is better comfort and function, not a promise that you'll be pain-free.

That might mean being able to:

  • Get through your workday without your back constantly reminding you it's there
  • Walk or stand with less discomfort
  • Turn over in bed without your hips or pelvis protesting
  • Move more comfortably as your pregnancy progresses
  • Find positions that feel better for your changing body

Is Chiropractic Care Safe During Pregnancy?

Yes, but it’s important that chiropractic care during pregnancy be adapted to the person and not treated like a standard appointment. Your stage of pregnancy, symptoms, medical history, comfort, and the technique being considered all matter.

Research specifically on spinal manipulation during pregnancy is limited. A 2021 systematic review found limited evidence of adverse events, including a handful of minor, temporary low-back reactions and one reported serious cervical event. The authors also noted that safety reporting in this area needs to improve, so there isn't enough evidence to give a blanket guarantee.

A separate expert consensus on chiropractic care during pregnancy and postpartum reached agreement on 71 best-practice recommendations, including examination, informed consent, treatment choices, imaging when appropriate, and coordination with other healthcare providers.

At Thrive, that means your care is adjusted around your pregnancy and your symptoms, including how you're positioned and which techniques are appropriate. Your chiropractor should also know about relevant health concerns and coordinate with your prenatal provider when needed.
