3 Common Structural Postural Distortions Of The Back
March 19, 2026

Common Postural Distortions
Kyphosis
Kyphosis is a term used to describe excessive curving of the upper back. It typically causes the top of the back to roll forward. People with kyphosis tend to have shoulders that look curved, and their chins tend to protrude excessively forward.
There are lots of things that can contribute to kyphosis, including injuries, muscular imbalances, degenerative diseases, and bad posture during adolescence or at work.
Lordosis
Lordosis refers to an excessive inward curve of the lower back. While a certain amount of curvature is normal and healthy, excessive lordosis can lead to pain and discomfort. It's often associated with weak core muscles, obesity, or pregnancy.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a lateral (side-to-side) curvature of the spine. It can range from mild to severe and is often first noticed during adolescence. While the exact cause of most scoliosis cases is unknown, it can be managed effectively with proper care.
Next Steps
Recognizing these postural distortions is the first step toward addressing them. Chiropractic care can play a significant role in managing postural distortions through adjustments, exercises, and postural education.
