What Is Neuromuscular Reeducation?

What Is Neuromuscular Reeducation?

Neuromuscular reeducation is a technique that’s used by chiropractors, physical therapists, and other rehabilitation specialists. Its goal is to eliminate pain and restore normal movement in your body. To understand neuromuscular reeducation, it’s important to understand how movement works.

Basically, your nerves and your muscles work together to move different parts of your body. Normally, your brain sends signals through your nerves. Then, your muscles react to these signals and respond accordingly, resulting in movement.

This is almost completely subconscious. Over time, you learn how to adjust your movements automatically, and you don’t even think about things like raising your arm, walking up a set of stairs, and so on.

But when an injury or other medical condition affects your ability to move, you may no longer be able to move the same way that you used to. That’s where neuromuscular reeducation comes in. This is a family of techniques that are designed to retrain your muscles and your nerves to work together, and restore healthy movement patterns.

how does neuromuscular reeducation work?

The process is different for everyone. First, you’ll come in for a consultation at Thrive Wellness Center. One of our chiropractors will examine you, discuss your medical history, and check your balance, movements, posture, and range of motion. They will also assess the overall strength and flexibility of your muscles.

Based on this information and a discussion about your concerns and your goals for treatment, our chiropractors can develop a neuromuscular reeducation plan. Treatment may involve activating muscles with trigger point therapy, stretches, repetitive movements, and other exercises.

Over time, these techniques help reinforce healthy movement patterns, retrain the brain-body connection, and improve overall muscle and joint health and responsiveness. Every patient is different, so it’s important to see the team at Thrive Wellness Center and to get a treatment plan that will help you reach your specific goals.

why would i need neuromuscular reeducation?

Neuromuscular reeducation is often part of a treatment program after serious injuries and trauma. For example, if you are in a car accident and lose part of the sensation or movement in your arm, neuromuscular reeducation may be able to help you recover and move your arm more naturally.

In some cases, neuromuscular reeducation may also be used to help you recover after a neurological event caused by a traumatic brain injury, a stroke, or a variety of other medical conditions that may affect your ability to move.
